B. Catharine Craven, BA, MD, FRCP(C), MSc, CCD

Dr. Craven, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, is a Senior Scientist within the Neural Engineering and Therapeutics Team at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and the Medical Lead of the Spinal Cord Rehab Program at the Toronto Rehab’s Lyndhurst Centre within the University Health Network.

Dr. Craven earned her BA cum laude at York University in North York, Ontario and her MD at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. After graduating, Cathy completed her residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at McMaster University and a Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Craven is a recipient of numerous honours and awards including the Canadian Physiatry Research and Development Fellowship Support Award, Division of Physiatry Achievement Award, Division of Physiatry Innovator of the Year Award, and Craig H. Nielson Foundation Senior Scientist Award. Dr. Craven led publication of the Rick Hansen Institute sponsored E-Scan Atlas ‘Capturing Capacity in Canadian SCI Rehabilitation’ and is Chair of the Rick Hansen Institute CARE Committee. Dr. Craven has published over 160 articles in peer-reviewed journals and her articles have been cited over 3,200 times. (www.idapt.com/research/scimanifesto)

Dr. Craven’s clinical and research expertise is in the prevention and treatment of secondary health conditions among individuals with spinal cord injury and their related health service needs. Her recent work has focused on the associations between changes in body composition and multimorbidity among individuals with chronic spinal cord injury. Dr. Craven, leads the SCI-HIGH project, aimed at reshaping SCI rehabilitation by 2020 through developing and implementing indicators of quality care linked with accreditation standards. Dr. Craven also leads the Central Recruitment program at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute with vision and tenacity.
