Most Memorable York University Experience My 5 years as a member of York Yeomen Swim team. I have many happy memories of practices and competitions. I also made great friends who are still among my closest friends today and met my wife Ann (a member of the women's varsity swim team).
York University Anecdote or Highlight One great memory was made during orientation week when I first started at York in 1974. I attended an orientation event at Bethune College's "Tap n' Keg" with some friends and saw the Good Brothers in concert. That along with the beer made for an auspicious start to my University and academic career. I so enjoyed university that I never wanted to leave.
Highlight(s) of Professional Career My academic research career focused primarily on the physiology of exercise induced muscle damage and repair mechanisms and the influence of factors such as estrogen in these mechanisms. I also researched the potential for therapeutic interventions (eg. massage, ultrasound etc.) to influence muscle healing, the effects of antioxidants and oxidative stress of muscle and exercise training effects on clinical and healthy populations. I have published over 90 peer reviewed research papers, given almost 30 invited international conference presentations and over 150 conference free communications of my research. I have also co-authored and edited 2 textbooks related to muscle damage/repair and exercise biochemistry.
As a university professor, my courses included exercise physiology, nutrition and biochemistry for undergraduate and graduate students.
